Stop!
And answer out loud, do you fear by seeing that big book that you must read for
the exam within certain number of days? Do you feel overwhelmed by the amount
that is left to read or that is left to be studied and revised?
This article is specially aimed at these two
problems.
Time-
Imagine
you planned for studying for 3 hours for that exam. You studied continuously
and at last you felt like the subject is more difficult and is hard than it was
before approaching. Right?
So
before opening that book, fix a time span that you would give to the subject.
Then divide this time in time periods of 20-40 minutes and then take break for
5 minutes after every time period.
Setting
time has many advantages-
1) It gives you physical rest
and mental relaxation.
2) Recalling and
understanding works together better. Recalling is able to tell people
or yourself what you just understood by reading the text. There is clear
distinction between recalling and understanding.
or yourself what you just understood by reading the text. There is clear
distinction between recalling and understanding.
Do
a quick review of what you just read and then Do a quick preview of what you
would be reading in the next 20-40 time period.
Amount-
1) Once the time is set, the
next immediate thing is amount to be studied.
2) Make the amount to be covered reasonable.
3) Advantage of setting a
reasonable amount to be studied in a given amount of time is that it gives you
a volume terrain to run on. It becomes a relatively easy goal than reading the
entire book haphazardly.
4) At the starting and ending
of the sections to be covered in a certain
chronological terrain (i.e. time), use large sized paper markers.
chronological terrain (i.e. time), use large sized paper markers.
This time and amount must not be thought like linear
steps rather they must be thought as interrelated concepts of approaching the
subject matter. In other words you can solve these speed reading problems in
any order you want. Setting time first and then amount or setting amount first
and then time. Both ways work.
Setting these two things beforehand makes it clear
what you are supposed to do and this really kills that underlying feeling of
fear of the unknown.
In the next article, regression and back-skipping are
the two problems of speed reading that are discussed. it titled as-"How to get rid of confusion while studying?"
